3 Ways to Tie A Scarf

I’m from the northern region of Nigeria and growing up, I wore scarves a lot.

Scarves were a big part of our traditional attires. They were such a commonplace clothing item for females—and you could find women wearing them as an attachment to an outfit or simply to match their outfits.

The scarf-wearing practice is common in religious communities, and in many churches, where women cover their heads, you can find several women with scarves on. So, given how common scarves were around me, I learnt how to tie scarves stylishly from a very young age.

However, when I moved to Canada, I rarely wore scarves anymore. This was due to a bunch of reasons—ranging from bad hair days, dry hot summers, crazy cold Winnipeg winters, or just the fact that no one ever really wore them around me anymore.

But that changed during this recent summer. I live in Vancouver now, and the summers aren’t as dry as Winnipeg and snow rarely fall during the winters. This means I’m able to explore different kinds of clothing items including scarves. As such, I’ve found myself wearing scarves more recently—and I absolutely love it.

I love that I can accessorize outfits with scarves on a good or bad hair day. Scarves elevate just about every look. In my opinion, they are simply a must-have.

Recently, I got a scarf from Arewa Label. Arewa Label has scarves with a wide variety of styles; their scarves can be worn and paired with different outfits to complete a beautiful look. In the next section, I’ll share four different ways I styled my Arewa Label scarf.

  1. This is a fairly simple way to tie the scarf. You can do this in two easy steps:

  • Step 1: Fold the scarf into two halves.

  • Step 2: Once you fold it, you put the sharp edges at the front of your head and tie it to the back. You can tie it higher or lower, up to you. For example, if you have braids, you can put it up in a pony tail and have the scarf tied a bit higher.

2. If you simply want to try something different, this is the style to go with. This style is achieved in the two simple steps as follows:

  • Step 1: Fold the scarf multiple times until you’ve gotten to the end.

  • Step 2: Divide your hair and put the scarf between your hair and tie to the back.

3. This style gives me a Parisian vibe. It’s perfect for bad hair days—but make-it-stylish. It is most likely the fastest style to get done. You simply fold the scarf into a v-shape and wrap it around your head. For extra support, I will recommend making a small knot in front of your neck to keep the scarf from loosening easily.

There you have it: three ways to tie a scarf.

My favourite is number 2 because I love how it elevates the hair and adds that extra pop. What’s your favourite style? How do you like to style your scarves?
