3 Shopping Tips for the 2022 Holiday Sales Season

No matter how badly you want an item, you’re most likely prefer  get it at a discounted price.

To be fair, some brands and items are worth their expensive prize and may provide lasting value.  But, oftentimes, such items are not easy to come by especially when you compare them to always-and-readily-available fast-fashion brand items.

Fast fashion is the access consumers have to the design, creation, and marketing of clothes that make fashion trends quick, cheap and readily available. Fast fashion makes purchasing clothes on impulse easy and affordable, and it encourages consumers to update their wardrobes regularly to stay up to date with changing trends.

As you know, the end of the year is usually filled with so many deals and sales—one of which is the Black Friday sales. In 2022, Black Friday is happening on Friday, November 25 and from then till the end of the year, you can expect many sales from your favourite brands. .

In this article, I share five tips you can use to shop smartly during this year’s holiday sales season. These tips will help you identify and shop for clothing items you’ll enjoy wearing for a long time.

  1. Shop for quality and not quantity

It is better to have one quality clothing item that’s durable and valuable for a long time than ten that won’t last you more than a couple months.

For most people, the default mindset is to buy as much as you can when shopping during the holiday sales season. But it’s important to resist shopping for quantity and focus on shopping for quality. Quality clothes are often made up of natural fibers such as wool, cotton, silk and cashmere. They are considered quality because they are able to hold up better over time after frequent washing. However, materials that are mixed with natural fibers and synthetic blend are considered good especially when the natural fiber is in higher quantity.

Quality clothes can be identified by the texture or feel of the clothes. If the clothes texture feels light the material is not quality while if the texture feels heavy or thick the material is quality. This can be observed by holding the garment up to the light and see if much light penetrates. Also, high quality clothes usually have good stitching and come with extra buttons and are usually lined within - mostly for warm clothes.

One way to approach this tip is to look for items you actually, really need, and splurge on it. This item can be any of the following; a coat, boots, bag, jacket, jeans. Basically, an item that is a wardrobe essential and will last you a long term. Either splurge on one item or priotize a few essential items and shop.

2. Shop for the next season

The holiday sales season isn’t the season to shop for the holidays. It’s always a smart idea to shop for the next season in the current one. This is because you get good, discounted prices on items that aren’t in season.

For example, this year, you can decide to shop for the next year’s spring season during the holidays. Instead of shopping for just the holiday season, also think of seasons ahead so you can get a good deal as well as enjoy wearing your outfit for a longer period. However, this is dependent on where you live, because different regions have different climate weathers and there might be a need for a certain type of clothing more than the other.

3. Shop for items you actually like (and not just items on sales)

Shopping for what you actually like is such an underated tip. You would expect most people to think this way but unfortunatley, they don’t.

It is easy to buy an item just because it’s $10. But just because an item is cheap, doesn’t mean you need it. It also doesn’t mean you will wear it often. That item may be worn once and left to rut in your wardrobe. So this holiday sales season, please avoid picking items just because of the price or for an imaginary event that you think might happen at some point. Instead, shop for clothes that you actually like and can wear anytime.

The goal for sharing these tips is to help you shop with a purpose and plan better this holiday sales season. I hope you’ll consider shopping for clothing items that will actually work for you and your wardrobe in the long run, and not just because they are on sales.
