Why You Should Be More Comfortable In Your Own Clothes

Have you ever caught yourself wearing a particular type of clothes to feel accepted by the people around you? I know it sounds crazy, but it’s a real thing because of the standards society has built around fashion, which has resulted in different interpretations among individuals.

The idea behind the design is basically to explore different cuts, fabrics, styles, and textures by bringing them together to create a piece of clothing. This has led designers to explore their creative mindset to create timeless pieces. Nowadays, designers are using this medium to express the beliefs they have through the creation of clothes. They share the creative process behind the clothes they wear and design for us, the consumers.

Now there’s nothing wrong with expressing yourself through your craft, but the lines have become blurred a bit because of ideas or designs best suited for women termed as hot or sexy. These styles have now been interpreted as the standards of what we as women have to wear to show we are empowered, enlightened, trendy, or fashionable.

The Late Karl Lagerfeld was an example of such a designer who had strong opinions about women, which led to so many controversies. He believed that all women should be slim, especially those modeling, and created his clothing pieces with a singular focus on what he believed every woman should be like.

It’s one thing to create clothes based on an idea or what comes naturally to you, but it’s another thing to pass that message as it’s the way forward. I don’t think women's empowerment has to be portrayed by mini clothes, cutouts, low v’s, etc. These are all simply creative ideas that make up the clothes but are not what makes a woman confident or defines her.

These designs are nice, but the interpretations have been taken overboard, and now we see the rise of explosive fashion versus modest fashion because not everyone is comfortable with what is considered ideal. I understand that some designs can be overboard, but I also understand the beauty of taking fashion as a form of art and enjoying it through that lens. Using these creative mediums to influence consumers is not ideal.

Acceptance starts from you as a person, embodying who you really are and embracing it well. It’s not defined by what you wear because what you wear only reflects what you already stand for. So please, next time, when choosing clothing pieces, choose what makes you feel like yourself. Whether that be long maxi skirts or dresses or shorts, wear it because that is you and not what you have to do to look hot or sexy.
